Experiencing stress and anxiety is part of the human condition. It is common and affects people of all ages and backgrounds.
Stress and anxiety can range from mild worry to severe distress and interfere with daily life. Common effects of stress are headache, upset stomach, muscle aches and pains, lack of motivation, restlessness, overeating and undereating, irritability, anger, substance abuse, sadness, depression, and anxiety symptoms, such as increased fear and worry, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Unmanaged stress can contribute to many health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
Luckily there are many effective ways to cope. It is important to remember that everyone experiences stress and anxiety differently. What works for one person may not work for another. So learning practical coping skills unique to your needs is essential for maintaining good health.
Exercise: Regular physical activity may reduce anxiety symptoms and improve overall mood.
Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness can help you stay in the present moment and reduce anxious thoughts.
Relaxation techniques: Relaxation techniques such as breath work, massage, acupuncture, and yoga can help reduce physical tension and calm the mind.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT): CBT is a type of psychotherapy that can help individuals identify and change negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety and better manage stress.
Lifestyle changes: Making changes to your diet and sleep habits and reducing alcohol and caffeine intake can also help reduce symptoms of anxiety.
